This paper is concerned with the political connection between Palmerston and the county and examines the political landscape of early nineteenth century Hampshire. It brings to life the election of 1832 and, using a range of primary sources, reveals the main issues of the day - parliamentary reform, agricultural conditions and the abolition of slavery - and the ways in which Palmerston, his agents and supporters worked to secure victory in the face of considerable Tory opposition. The paper also examines the shift in the county's politics between 1832 and the next election in 1835, when Lord Palmerston and Sir George Staunton were surprised to find themselves defeated by the Conservative candidates.
