Our knowledge of the British executive has been transformed in recent years by the Whitehall Programme of the Economic and Social Research Council. While some of the studies have been specially commissioned empirical research projects, Rose's contribution has been to write a book on the Prime Minister, drawing on some 40 years of research and reflection on government and politics in Britain and elsewhere.
