The aim of this paper is to develop a research agenda for commercial and non-commercial homes which would support the development of rural and peripheral tourism destinations. Consideration is given to the nature of Commercial Home Enterprises (CHEs) and their importance to tourism destinations. Certain myths and prejudices concerning CHEs are addressed prior to considering socio-economic and cultural drivers of CHEs demand. A tourism destination-level research agenda informed by the review and recent research into CHEs is proposed.
