Europe leads the world on wind turbine technology, development and deployment, especially offshore, so it is no surprise that the European Wind Energy Conference (EWEC) is the most important annual event for this fast growing sector. On behalf of IET Renewable Power Generation (RPG) we are pleased to present the second successive EWEC special issue, based on selected papers presented at EWEC 2008 that have been refereed and suitably extended to meet the requirements of an international academic journal. Wind energy technology is still developing rapidly and deployment is accelerating as wind becomes the main mechanism for achieving EU carbon emission reduction and renewable energy targets. EWEA conferences reflect the very latest developments and analyses and this ensures that the special issue is as up to date as any properly peer reviewed journal can be in this fast moving subject area.
