Abstract

Optimization is the act of obtaining the best result under given circumstances. In design, construction, and maintenance of any engineering system, engineers have to take many technological and managerial decisions at every stage. The ultimate goal of all such decisions is either to minimize the efforts required or to maximize the desired benefit. Effort required or the benefit desired in any practical situation can be expressed as a function of certain decision variables. This book therefore provides the ground rules in understanding the techniques and methodologies, complete with case studies, for hands on learning for the product development. This includes a summary of the basics of CAD modelling, optimization (topology, structural, shape) using a range of finite element analysis based tools, design sensitivity analysis, design verifications and selection of appropriate manufacturing process. It is hoped the mix of approaches with good case studies will help the user in their understanding of engineering design optimization.
